SSO - Centralized access control to related software systems

Single Sign On (SSO) describes a mechansim for authentification and acess control. With Single Sign On a user logs in once to his workplace and gains access to all neccessary services and software systems or servers he has been authorized to access without using different usernames or passwords.

Single Sign On is widely accepted and expected by most users like employees in large enterprises. In their everyday work Single Sign On is a time saving simplification, since they don't have to log in separately with different user credentials to each self services or portal they are expected to use while doing their work. Also for the Identy Access Management provided by IT and HR departements Single Sign On (SSO) makes it easier, since employee data is maintained centralized.

For large companies Single Sign On (SSO) offers effective cost and work time reduction at an affordable expense for installation and systems interconnection. Once up and running Single Sign On provides less workload to change management when new employees enter the company or leave it, or just switch to a different departement or job description, with different user roles and privileges in business processes.

There are many Single Sign On (SSO) implementations available for Intranet Portal Solutions, most common are Kerberos and SAML (Security Assertion Markup Language) for Access Management which typically work together with Identity Management Services and protocols like LDAP or Active Directory. Decentralized authentification protocols like OpenID or oAuth2 might be used for access control to web services on public insecure networks & Internet.
